The Nigerian Senate is the upper chamber of Nigeria’s bicameral National Assembly, established under the 1999 Constitution. It plays a critical role in lawmaking, oversight, and representing Nigeria’s diverse regions.

Structure and Composition: The Senate comprises 109 senators, with three representing each of Nigeria’s 36 states and one for the Federal Capital Territory. Senators are elected for four-year terms, renewable, via direct elections.

Powers and Functions: The Senate passes bills, approves budgets, and confirms presidential appointments, such as ministers and judges. It conducts oversight of government agencies and can investigate national issues. The Senate also ratifies international treaties.

Leadership: The Senate President, elected by senators, leads the chamber.

Challenges: The Senate faces criticism for high costs, corruption allegations, and delays in lawmaking. Balancing regional interests and public trust remains a challenge.
