United took the lead shortly after through Bruno Fernandes and doubled the lead through Casemiro, before the Brazilian midfielder was sent off for two bookable offences.
Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back for Chelsea late on in the second half, but the Red Devils held on and secured a crucial win for Ruben Amorim.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca stylishly blamed the Spanish goalkeeper for receiving such a red card early in the game and throwing the entire plan in the bin.
“We still had 95 minutes to play, I think even Robert is aware of that, but also it's difficult because he has to make a decision in one second or two seconds, so it's difficult,” he said as quoted by Football London.
“But if you ask me, I prefer to be one goal down after three minutes than one player down after three minutes.”
Sanchez won't miss Premier League game
According to Sports Illustrated, Sanchez will be suspended for only one match after the action leading to his red card was deemed to be “denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity”, other than violent conduct.
This was welcome news for Chelsea as their first-choice goalkeeper will not be unavailable for long, which could have been the case if he had been suspended for three matches.

Filip Jorgensen will be in goal at the LNER Stadium, with the Spanish goalkeeper expected back in between the sticks against Brighton at the weekend.
Sanchez, who is in his third season at Stamford Bridge after joining from Brighton in 2023, has endured an inconsistent spell during his time at the club.
His performances at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA mean the club kept faith in him despite being linked to Mike Maignan and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
However, the club are confident that Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who is on loan at Strasbourg, will be ready to displace Sanchez next season.
