Nigeria secured a valuable point in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after playing a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night, September 9.

Bafana Bafana took the lead in the 25th minute through an own goal from Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong.

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey became the hero of the night after scoring an equaliser in the 44th minute, converting Bright Osayi-Samuel's cross.

Before the encounter, Nigeria had beaten Rwanda 1-0 with the only goal coming through Tolu Arokodare, while South Africa pummeled Lesotho 3-0.

Bafana Bafana are on 17 points, topping the group, while the Super Eagles have 11 points in third position, per TnTSports.

The Cheetahs of Benin Republic humiliated the Crocodiles of Lesotho 4-0 to move to second position, denting Nigeria's chances of attending the playoff, per BBC.

Who predicted the number of goals?

Before the kick-off, a 196-year-old predicted the number of goals Nigeria would score against South Africa during the 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, September 6.

The reptile stopped at the number two to indicate the Super Eagles will find the net twice against the Bafana Bafana.

The particular tortoise is regarded as the oldest living creature on earth, located at the Prison Island sanctuary in Zanzibar.

The prediction of the longest-living land animals was correct, but unfortunately, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong scored an own goal.
