Nigeria played a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening, September 9.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong scored an own goal in the 25th minute after putting the ball in the back of the net following a counterattack from the Bafana Bafana.

A minute to the end of the first half, Calvin Bassey came to the rescue after converting a cross from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

In the second half, Eric Chelle made tactical changes, introducing Wolves' new signing Tolu Arokodare. His introduction brought life into the attack of the Super Eagles, while Brentford player Benjamin Fredrick imposed his authority in the backline.

Former Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi made way for Crystal Palace player Christantus Uche, making a great impression in the 22 minutes of play, per Punch.

South Africa tried to double the lead as the Bafana Bafana midfielder almost caught Stanley Nwabali off guard. Samuel Chukwueze also got an opportunity to give the Super Eagles a deserved win, but the defenders of South Africa took him out.

Nigeria are in second place with 11 points, as South Africa sit comfortably on the log with 17 points, per Channels TV.

The Bafana Bafana are eyeing a World Cup ticket, with their last appearance in 2010, where they hosted the Mundial, while the Super Eagles are seeking to qualify after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.

South Africa captain sends message to Super Eagles

Legit.ng earlier reported that South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has declared that they are fully focused on beating Nigeria when the two teams meet in an all-important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night.
