Nigeria's second all-time highest goal scorer, Victor Osimhen, suffered an injury during their match against Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Osimhen was replaced in the 35 minute Panathinaikos forward Cyril Dessers in the 35th minutes after the doctors declared him unfit to continue the match.

Before his injury, the Galatasaray forward scored a goal in the 7th minute, which was ruled offside.

Nigeria eventually got the winning goal through substitute Tolu Arokodare in the 51st minute as he scrambled the ball into the back of the net after the goalkeeper prevented his earlier chance.

The victory lifted Nigeria to 10 points from 7 matches in Group C, while Rwanda remain on 8 points, making qualification still wide open.

Eric Chelle update on Osimhen's fitness

After the win over Rwanda, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle gave an instant update on the injury status of Victor Osimhen.

According to Daily Post, Chelle said the team doctors will analyse Osimhen's ankle to certify him fit for the match against South Africa. He said:

“I can’t say much about Victor for now. He has pain in his ankle. We will see how he feels tomorrow.
“I will also discuss with the doctors to know if he will be ready for the next game.”

Melo shows concern

Galatasaray legend Felipe Melo is worried about the injury Victor Osimhen sustained during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In a post on X, the Brazilian legend urged the AFCON silver medallist not to get hurt while playing for his country. He wrote:

Osimhen has scored three goals for Nigeria during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in three matches, and scored two goals for Galatasaray in the 2025/26 Super Lig 1.

Referee disallows Osimhen’s goal

Legit.ng earlier reported that Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a heavy blow after Victor Osimhen went off injured in the first half against Rwanda.
