Speaker Abbas’ Aide Dumps APC, Announces 2027 Plan

In a fresh political shift ahead of the 2027 elections, an aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has dumped the ruling party.

Godfrey Gaiya, who serves as Special Assistant on Political Matters (North West), left the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Thursday, April 2, with The Punch, Gaiya confirmed the move and announced his next political step, a bid for the Kaduna South Senatorial seat.
He said, “My decision to join the ADC was carefully considered,” explaining that he consulted widely with his supporters before making the switch.

According to him, many people are now looking for a better option that focuses on welfare, peace, and development.
Gaiya, a former Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, insisted his defection was not out of anger or personal issues. Instead, he said the ADC offers a new direction for Nigerians who are tired of “politics of exclusion and unfulfilled promises.”
He believes running for the Senate will give him a bigger platform to tackle economic and social challenges affecting people in Kaduna South.
Despite leaving the APC, Gaiya expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities he had, adding that Nigeria’s democracy needs stronger institutions and more inclusive political spaces going forward.
APC chieftain Yakasai defects to ADC
In a related development, Legit.ng reported that Salihu Tanko Yakasai officially resigned from the APC and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections, following consultations with family, friends, and political associates.
Yakasai, a former aide to Abdullahi Ganduje and 2023 PRP governorship candidate in Kano, urged others to join the ADC. He pointed to convenient online registration and expressed hope for the party’s success at all government levels.

Former Kano deputy gov quits APC
Previously, Legit.ng reported that Nasiru Gawuna, former deputy governor of Kano and 2023 APC governorship candidate, voluntarily resigned from the party on March 29, 2026, ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gawuna, who addressed a resignation letter to the APC chairman of Gawuna Ward in Nassarawa LGA, expressed gratitude for the party’s opportunities but withheld details about his reasons or next political move.
Observers note the development adds a fresh twist to Kano’s political landscape, with speculation mounting over Gawuna’s future alignment and possible influence on the upcoming 2027 electoral contests.
Kwankwaso quits NNPP ahead of 2027
Legit.ng earlier reported that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate and national leader of the NNPP, officially resigned from the party on March 29, citing the need for a fresh political alignment.
Kwankwaso, 69, thanked the NNPP for the opportunity to serve but said the current political landscape required him to seek a platform that offers the best chance to influence Nigeria’s trajectory ahead of the 2027 elections.
Following his resignation, the Kwankwasiyya Movement announced that members should join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with Kwankwaso set to formally register with the party.
