The PDP’s hold on Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni marked the only resistance to the APC’s unprecedented dominance in the polls.

PDP holds onto three Rivers LG regions
According to the official announcement by Dr Michael Odey, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the PDP emerged victorious in Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government areas.
These three councils, long considered PDP strongholds, stood firm against the APC wave that swept through the remaining 20 LGAs.
Port Harcourt, the state capital, and Obio Akpor, a densely populated urban centre, have historically been political bastions for the PDP. Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, located in the oil-rich region of the state, also remained loyal to the ruling party, defying the broader trend of APC gains.
APC’s performance overshadowed by PDP’s urban hold
While the APC’s victory in 20 LGAs marked a historic milestone, its strongest showing in Rivers State since 1999, political observers noted that the PDP’s retention of key urban and strategic councils could influence future electoral dynamics.
The results suggest that while the APC has made significant inroads at the grassroots level, the PDP continues to command influence in urban and economically vital areas.
Dr Odey, speaking at the RSIEC headquarters in Port Harcourt, commended the peaceful conduct of the elections and affirmed that the results reflected the will of the electorate. He emphasised that the commission had followed due process throughout the electoral exercise.

Rivers LG polls a ‘grand charade’ - Analyst claims
Political analyst, Dr. Toks Oguntuga, has described the recently concluded Rivers state local government elections as another example of Nigeria’s flawed democratic process.
“We are all witnesses to the perennial masquerade called local government elections in Nigeria, a grand charade dressed up as democracy,” he told Legit.ng.
According to him, the outcome in Rivers state was no different from past experiences, except that power shifted unusually.
“The recently concluded exercise in Rivers state was no deviation from this ignoble tradition. Yet, unlike the usual script where the governor’s lackeys carry the spoils, this time the laurels were seized by the minions of his godfather, who, emboldened by the brazen backing of the federal government, strutted away with victory,” he further alleged.

The PDP retained control of Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni—areas traditionally seen as strongholds of the party.
