Makurdi, Benue State - Members of the Benue State House of Assembly have elected Hon. Alfred Emberga Berger as the new speaker.
Legit.ng earlier reported that former speaker, Aondona Dajoh, resigned from his position on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

The new speaker, Alfred, was elected during the plenary session presided over by the deputy speaker, Lami Danaldi-Ogenyi. Hon. Alfred represents Makurdi North State Constituency
As reported by The Punch, the new speaker is one of the four members suspended for attempting to remove the former speaker.
The house on Sunday, August 24, 2025, resolved to lift the suspension on the four members during an e, emergency plenary.
The majority leader, Saater Tiseer, moved a motion for the lifting of the suspension and was seconded by Samuel Jiji of Logo state constituency.
The deputy speaker said:
“Following the motion raised by the majority leader and supported by members of the house, this house has resolved to lift the suspension of the four members.”
The four members were ushered into the chamber after their suspension was lifted and the nomination of the new speaker was announced.
A member representing the Makurdi South state constituency, Douglas Akyaa, moved a motion and nominated Emberger for the position of new speaker, while Abu Umoru of the Apa state constituency seconded the motion.
The Clerk of the House, John Hwande, administered the oath of office to the new speaker after there was no other nomination.
Emberger commended the former speaker for his service and commitment to the progress of the house and the people of Benue State.
In his acceptance speech, the new speaker said:
“To my esteemed colleagues, I assure you that this leadership will be anchored on inclusiveness fairness, and respect for diverse opinions.
“This house under my watch will work harmoniously with the executive and judiciary while maintaining our independence in line with the principle of separation of powers.”
Governor Alia speaks on attempt to remove Benue speaker
Legit.ng recalls that Governor Hyacinth Alia reacted to the alleged plot to impeach Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh.
The Benue state governor said he had no hand in the attempt to remove Dajor as Speaker of the state assembly.

Benue Assembly suspends four lawmakers
In a similar story, Legit.ng reported that four lawmakers in Benue State were suspended for six months following an alleged plot to impeach the Speaker of the House of Assembly.
The suspension was triggered by a motion of urgent importance, accusing the legislators of attempting to destabilise the Assembly.
Speaker Aondona Dajoh has also appointed a new spokesperson, replacing one of the suspended members.
