Speaking on Trust TV on Sunday, August 10, Dalung stated that the pledge was not tied to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), noting that it was rooted in Obi’s personal conviction about governance.

As reported by Vanguard on Monday, August 11, Dalung said:

“The idea of single term has nothing to do with coalition, it is just a general conviction of Peter Obi because I have engage him on it and he told me ‘what has destroyed our democracy is the issue of second term’ and he believes that a single term is enough for a person to make impact, whatever you want to do you ca do it. Leaders are easily distracted with second term. Immediately the first year, the second year, governance is easily abandoned and all you could hear is plans and preparation for second term.”

2027 presidency: Peter Obi's vow sparks controversy

Recall that Peter Obi reiterated his commitment to providing good governance within four years, dismissing the need for an extended tenure.

Obi made his intention known in a trending interview, where he affirmed that he is qualified to contest for president, and he would only run for a single term.

The former governor of Anambra state also addressed speculation regarding his alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

However, the presidency criticised Peter Obi over his renewed pledge.

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a post shared on his X page on Sunday, August 3, accused Peter Obi of dishonesty and inconsistency in leadership.

Jonathan, Atiku, Obi urged to join PDP race

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, said he supports the speculated return of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi to the PDP.

In a statement by his chief press secretary, Ibrahim Hassan Mahmoud, the PDP chieftain said he welcomed the politicians ahead of the party’s primaries, adding:

“The more, the merrier.”

Dalung declares war on Tinubu

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the former minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, had declared that the 2027 general elections would not just be another electoral cycle but a full-blown confrontation between the Nigerian people and the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during a recent interview on News Central, Dalung voiced strong dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, blaming the Tinubu-led government for deepening the hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
