A Nigerian man expressed his views online after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board made public the approved minimum scores required for entry into tertiary institutions across the country.

The announcement set out the lowest acceptable marks for admission into universities, colleges of nursing and polytechnics for the academic cycle.

Man criticises minimum scores for 2026 admission

After the update appeared on the board’s official X account, a user identified as @flamezbee reacted.

In his reaction, he voiced concern over the scores that had been agreed upon.

He noted that the figures felt too low and argued that such decisions might have consequences for the standard of education in the nation.

In his words:

"Honestly, these cut-off marks feel too low. Education standards are already struggling, and decisions like this could affect the quality of graduates in the future."

According to the information shared by the examination body, heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria had come to a unanimous decision regarding the minimum admissible scores.

The agreed benchmarks were set at 150 for universities, 150 for colleges of nursing, and 100 for polytechnics.

The board stated that the resolution was reached during its policy meeting on admissions held in Abuja.

"The Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria had unanimously agreed that the Minimum Admissible Scores for admissions into Universities should be 150, Colleges of Nursing, 150, and Polytechnics, 100," the post read.

The man commenting on the development warned that lowering the entry threshold could further weaken academic quality and affect the calibre of graduates produced by Nigerian institutions in subsequent years.

"So JAMB collected money from millions of students, failed them with hard questions, then lowered the bar and called it unanimous agreement. The exam was never about merit. It was about revenue."

"If you scored below 200 in UTME, just protect your mental health and avoid these schools Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University etc. Those schools will humble you academically before admission even starts."
