In his story, Gbenga Samuel-Wemimo said his wife bought the phone in September 2024 and wanted to trade it for another one at the UK store.
His words:
"My wife bought a brand new iPhone at the Apple store located at Jakande, Lekki Phase 1,Lagos last September. We decided to trade it in for a new one today at the Apple Store located at Westfield Stratford City Arcade (London) a few minutes ago. Only God did not let them call the police on us."

However, the store attendant scanned the phone, and it was discovered that it was a missing item.
Gbenga said he wondered what the store attendant was saying until more explanation was given to him.
He said:
"The attendant scanned the iPhone and declared that it had been reported as stolen. Stolen from where? It was not a used iPhone. It was new, purchased from an approved Apple Store and we have all the receipts intact."
According to Gbenga, they were told they could not swap the phone, since it was considered a missing item.
He noted:
"The attendant saw our indignation and went ahead to consult with her superiors. They scanned again and they declared that it was reported “missing”. They adjusted their language from stolen to missing and told us it has zero swap value. I was not shocked at all, even though I should be."
In a follow-up post, Gbenga showed what was written on the screen of the phone when the store attendant scanned it.
The write-up goes:
"Device has 0 Trade-In Value. The serial number of this device appears in a national database of missing property and cannot be accepted for trade-in at this time. Direct the customer to contact their carrier/service provider or eligibilitysupport@checkmend.com to learn more about the status of their device and steps they may take to make their device eligible for Trade In."

"Always buy a non-active iPhones (with full 12 months warranty). When you’re buying a new iPhone, always say non-active. There is new and there is new non-active. New is just repackaged, they clean up used iPhones, add fake packaging. They’re often less expensive than non-active ones."
