A former governorship aspirant in Zamfara State, Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has filed a petition with security agencies over alleged defamatory statements against former governor, Abdulaziz Yari.
Shinkafi, who currently serves as Executive Director of the Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development, submitted the petition through a legal firm to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police.

Copies of the petition were reportedly acknowledged by both the DSS and the police authorities.
Allegations linked to online statements
The petition, titled ‘Complaint of Criminal Defamation, Libel and Cybercrime’, accused a journalist, Jackson Ude, and some media organisations of making statements considered damaging to Yari’s reputation.
According to the filing, the allegations stemmed from claims reportedly made on 16 April 2026, suggesting that Yari was distributing large sums of money to politicians and keeping records for potential blackmail, while also lobbying for a possible vice-presidential slot.
The petition argued that such claims were false and aimed at tarnishing the image of the former governor.
“It is unfathomable to people of good conscience that a person who has participated in building goodwill and good character will now be part of its destruction,” the petition stated.
Calls for investigation under cybercrime laws
The legal representatives urged authorities to investigate the matter under relevant provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024.
They alleged that the statements were intended to discredit key figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and destabilise the political environment ahead of future elections.
The petition further claimed that those responsible should be subjected to investigation and due legal process.
Security agencies urged to act
Shinkafi called on the DSS and police to invite all individuals mentioned in the petition for questioning, stressing the need to protect the reputation and rights of those affected.
“In order to safeguard the fundamental rights of our client… we urge your good office to investigate this matter thoroughly,” the petition added.
He also pledged cooperation with security agencies, stating that relevant parties were ready to assist in any investigation into the allegations.
The development comes amid heightened political activity and growing concerns over misinformation in the lead-up to future electoral contests in Nigeria.
