Tragedy as Container Crushes Policeman, 1 Other in Lagos

  • Lagos has experienced another tragic incident as a 40-foot container truck crushed a tricycle in the Ijora Causeway area of the state

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said that a 40-foot container truck, fully laden, with the registration number XP 368 AKD, overturned on a tricycle, where a police officer and another passenger were killed.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the general manager of the traffic agency, announced the incident in a press statement on Tuesday, September 23.

According to Bakare-Oki, the accident happened earlier on Tuesday, and it was around the Ijora Causeway, inward the Ijora Senen-Up.

He explained that the preliminary investigation revealed that the articulated vehicle lost control when it was making a precarious manoeuvre under the Ijora Bridge and subsequently capsized. It then crushed the tricycle with the registration number KJA 364 QN.

“Regrettably, two passengers, a serving police officer included, were killed instantly," Bakare-Oki said.

6 people died in Lagos road accident

This came barely two weeks after six people lost their lives and nine others were seriously injured in a fatal accident along the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos state.

Two males, three female passengers, and a child died in the tragic accident at Ibeju Bus-Stop, while four others survived unhurt.

Eyewitnesses reported that the injured passengers were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital.

The eyewitnesses added that the deceased bodies were deposited in the mortuary of the same hospital, pending when their families would identify them.

Then, Bakare-Oki disclosed that the accident involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck carrying wooden planks and a white commercial bus with plate number AKD 336 YD.

According to Vanguard, Bakare-Oki said the nine injured survivors include three males and six females.

“The deceased comprised two adult males, three adult females, and one minor.”

The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Commander Kehinde Hamzat, said preliminary investigations revealed that the fatal accident was caused by speeding, route violation, and dangerous driving.

Recall that at least six people were reported dead after a bus with 27 passengers somersaulted along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun state.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Babatunde Akinbiyi explained what led to the tragic incident and revealed that 19 passengers sustained injuries.

In a similar development, Legit.ng reported that seven people, including two children, lost their lives in a tragic motor accident on the Damaturu–Kano highway in Yobe state.

The collision between a Sienna bus and a Toyota car at Warsalla village left more than a dozen others injured, with overspeeding cited as the cause.

Emergency responders swiftly evacuated victims to the Yobe State Teaching Hospital for treatment and deposition.
