Kwara North Stakeholders Demand 2027 Governorship Ticket from All Parties

Political actors in Kwara State are facing mounting pressure to shift the 2027 governorship ticket to Kwara North as key stakeholders rally for regional inclusion.

At a youth and stakeholder dialogue in Ilorin, the Chief of Staff to the Minister for Youth, Hon. Muhammed Funsho Abdullahi, urged all major parties to give the district its first shot at the state’s top job.

Kwara north leaders push 2027 governorship zoning

The event, organised by the Kwara North Youth Consultative Forum in partnership with a coalition of Kwara Central groups, brought together party leaders, elders and youth representatives from across the state.

Abdullahi said it was time for fairness to prevail, noting that since 1999 Kwara Central has produced governors for over two decades while Kwara South has held the office for eight years. Kwara North, he stressed, has never occupied the seat.

He called on the APC, PDP, ADC and other parties to officially zone their tickets to the region, citing national precedents.

“Political parties must do this right. But beyond zoning, the people of Kwara North must unite and present a credible candidate. Sentiment alone will not win an election. There must be unity and competence,” Abdullahi said.

He drew parallels with how the APC zoned its 2023 presidential ticket to the South after President Buhari’s tenure, a move that produced President Bola Tinubu.

Political stakeholders demand fair power rotation

Chairperson of the forum, Abdul Dayan Aishat Haruna, declared that the North is prepared to lead.

“We are only agitating for inclusiveness. In 2027, we should be given the opportunity to serve as governor of this state. We have competent and capable people in Kwara North who can lead just as others have done,” he said.

Haruna noted that the zone supported the current administration in 2023 to complete its second term and now expects reciprocal loyalty from other regions.

Barrister Kunle Suleiman, Chairman of the APC Elders Forum, described the demand as an issue of justice. He recalled that despite having a candidate in the last election, Kwara North still backed the APC and should now be rewarded.

Senator Ahmed Mohammed Wazir, a leading elder from the region, praised the gathering for bringing together APC, PDP and SDP members in a rare show of unity.

Stakeholders ended the meeting with a firm message to political parties: zoning the governorship to Kwara North in 2027 is not only politically strategic but a test of equity that the state must pass.
