In 2016, Kawu was kidnapped close to his domain while returning from Adogo headquarters of Ajaokuta.

Speaking shortly after his release in his palace where he had been receiving visitors, the monarch expressed gratitude to God, the then state governor Yahaya Bello and the people of his domain, for his safe release.

He told Channels Television that his abductors, on discovery that he was a traditional ruler, treated him well throughout his captivity.

The paramount ruler also said that no ransom was paid to the abductors.

After his abduction, his family said the abductors had demanded for 10 million Naira as ransom.

A day after he was kidnapped, Bello declared total war on the kidnappers and cultists that have laid siege on Kogi state.
