Muslims Working on Fridays is Unfair While Sunday is Work-Free, Reno Omokri Argues
- Reno Omokri has urged Nigeria to review its work schedule to give Muslims the same recognition Christians enjoy with Sundays
- He suggested that work hours be adjusted earlier from Monday to Thursday, allowing offices to close by midday on Fridays for Jumu’ah prayers
- Omokri said the proposal would ensure fairness in religious practice without reducing national productivity
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has urged the federal government to consider restructuring Nigeria’s work calendar in order to give Muslims the same recognition that Christians receive with Sundays.
Omokri made the appeal in a video posted on his verified Facebook page on Friday. He argued that before colonial influence, Fridays had long been observed as a sacred day of rest for Muslims.

Omokri calls for fairness to Muslims
According to him, it is unfair that while Christians enjoy Sunday as a national non-working day, Muslims are still expected to be at work on Fridays despite the spiritual importance of Jumu’ah prayers.
He proposed a work-hour adjustment as a fair solution. The suggestion, he said, would involve shifting office hours earlier from Monday to Thursday and closing by midday on Fridays.
Omokri explained that such a schedule would not affect economic output since the lost time on Friday would be recovered during the other days of the week.
“I don’t think it is fair for the Muslim Ummah for us to have Friday as a working day in Nigeria. Originally, before colonialism, it was not like that,” Omokri said.
He continued:
“Now we have Sunday as a non-working day and Friday as a working day. I think that we can achieve a compromise. What we can do is that instead of work beginning on Mondays all the way to Friday at 9am or 8am, we can start work at 7:30am on Mondays to Fridays and then on Friday we close at 12 o’clock. So the time we are going to lose on Friday we are going to gain it back from Monday to Thursday. So it is not going to affect our productivity as a country and our GDP. And then the Muslim Ummah can close at 12 noon and go for Solat Jumaat. That way, there would be a more equitable balance of our workday lives in Nigeria.”

Omokri added that his call was not intended to favor one religion over another but to create fairness in how Nigeria recognizes the religious practices of its major faith groups.
He maintained that adjusting work schedules would promote inclusivity and ensure that Muslims are not disadvantaged in a system shaped during the colonial era.
