The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, was attributed to overspeeding, according to emergency officials.
Speaking in Damaturu on Wednesday, Ibrahim Waziri, Information Officer of the Yobe State Emergency Ambulance Services (YEAS), confirmed the incident and described the scene as “devastating.”
He stated that the accident resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, all of whom were travelling in the Sienna bus. Among the deceased were two children.
Waziri added that more than a dozen passengers sustained injuries, including head and limb trauma.
He noted that one of the drivers involved in the crash was among the injured but survived due to the swift intervention of the YEAS rescue team.
“The prompt response of our team was crucial in saving lives,” Waziri said, emphasising the importance of rapid emergency services in such high-impact collisions.
Victims evacuated to Yobe state teaching hospital
All injured passengers and the deceased were transported from the crash site to the Yobe State Teaching Hospital. Waziri confirmed that the bodies had been deposited at the hospital morgue, while the injured were receiving medical treatment.
An eyewitness, Malam Isa Huseini, a resident of Warsalla village, told The Guardian that both vehicles were travelling at high speed before one veered off its lane and collided head-on with the other. “It was a terrible sight,” Huseini recounted, adding that the impact was so severe it left both vehicles mangled beyond recognition.
Call for caution on Damaturu–Kano highway
The tragic incident has reignited concerns over reckless driving and overspeeding on the Damaturu–Kano highway, a major route in northern Nigeria. Local authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits to prevent further loss of life.
This latest accident underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures and public awareness campaigns targeting high-risk driving behaviours across Yobe State and beyond.
