Explosion Damages Army Storage Facility in Ogun, Details Emerge

A storage facility at the Nigerian Army’s Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state, was damaged on Thursday following an early morning explosion and subsequent fire.

The blast occurred within a building used by the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.

The authorities have confirmed that no one was harmed in the fire incident.

As reported by Channels, Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele described the incident as a “minor” occurrence, as he confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded. She said troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, quickly brought the situation under control before the flames could spread beyond the immediate area.

“Specifically, in the early hours of today, 14 August 2025, a localized explosion occurred within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron leading to a limited fire outbreak.

Swift intervention by troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working closely with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured that the fire was quickly contained.
Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials. A detailed assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss,” she stated.

Building suffers damage after fire outbreak

The explosion left the affected building significantly damaged, with parts of its structure weakened. Some stored equipment and materials were also destroyed, but the exact value of the loss has yet to be determined.

Residents of Ilese and neighboring communities reported hearing a loud bang at dawn, which was followed by smoke rising from the barracks.

While some locals initially feared a more serious security threat, military personnel assured them that the incident was confined to the storage building and did not pose a danger to the wider area.

Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify the cause of the explosion and prevent a recurrence.

The Army confirmed that it is working closely with relevant agencies to review safety protocols, particularly in handling and storing sensitive materials.

In its public advisory, the Nigerian Army urged residents to remain calm and continue with their normal daily activities. Anele assured that all necessary measures were being taken to maintain safety within the barracks and surrounding communities.

Nigerian Army begins recruitment

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that qualified and suitable Nigerians had been asked to apply for the ongoing recruitment at the Nigerian Army — the DSSC.

Legit.ng understands that the recruitment opportunity is open to both civilians who have had no previous force experience or training and serving military personnel.

The DSSC will be granted for a total of 15 years, for an initial period of 8 years, renewable yearly for another period of 7 years.
