Alaafin of Oyo, Top Yoruba Traditional Leaders Storm Abuja, Reason, Details Emerge

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, on Wednesday, August 13, led a high-powered delegation of prominent Yoruba traditional rulers to Abuja.
Separate meetings with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abass, and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun were held.

Oba Owoade was accompanied by his wife, Abiwumi Owoade, Prince Akeem Adeyemi, who represents Oyo federal constituency, and Alhaji AbdulWasiu Adebisi.
Other royal fathers present included the Ataoja of Osogbo, the Olu of Ilaro, the Oloro of Oro, and the Olusin of Ijora Isin.

House speaker promises support for monarchs
Speaking during the courtesy visit, Dr Abass described the engagement with Oba Owoade as “warm, engaging, and deeply enriching.”
He said the House of Representatives remained committed to strengthening the roles of monarchs in national development, revealing that a bill to formally assign roles to traditional rulers was already receiving legislative attention.
“The green chamber has always supported our monarchs and will continue to do so. In 2025, we are prioritising the passage of a bill to give them constitutional recognition. We will give it speedy passage,” Abass said.
The Speaker also briefed the Alaafin on bills and motions he had sponsored in support of the traditional institution.
IGP assures of stronger police, traditional rulers’ collaboration
During the delegation’s visit to the Force Headquarters, IGP Egbetokun stressed the crucial role traditional institutions play in community safety and national security.
“Traditional rulers are vital partners in sustaining peace and stability. We will ensure robust collaboration with them to enhance inclusivity at the grassroots and to achieve sustainable peace and development,” the IGP said.
He assured the royal fathers of closer engagement between the police and traditional institutions to tackle insecurity and strengthen community policing in the South-West and across Nigeria.
