In a statement addressing the incident, Obi stressed the critical need for transparency and fairness in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
Fight against corruption must be impartial
Obi highlighted a contradiction in the country’s anti-corruption campaign, emphasising that the sincerity of leadership is essential to tackling corruption effectively.
He said,
"I have always reiterated that the sincerity of leaders is what is needed to tackle corruption in our society."
Obi expressed hope for a future where anti-corruption laws apply equally to all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.
Demand for equal application of the law
The opposition leader urged anti-graft agencies to act in accordance with the rule of law and conscience rather than political bias or convenience.
"I expect the anti-graft operatives to be guided by their conscience and the rule of law if they hope to achieve much in wiping out corruption in our society," he stated.
He further called for evidence-based procedures, warning against arbitrary actions influenced by political interests.
"The rules of evidence and fact must replace impressions and preconceptions. In a credible fight against corruption, the public must be convinced that the rules are even and the subjects are not arbitrarily selected by the political convenience of the powers that be," Obi said.
Calls for fairness resonate amid political tensions
Peter Obi’s comments come amid growing concerns over the perceived selective use of anti-corruption agencies to target opposition figures. His call for fairness echoes wider demands for transparency and impartiality in governance.
As the political landscape continues to heat up ahead of the 2027 elections, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see if anti-corruption efforts are truly equitable and free from political interference.
