Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the immediate past governor of Sokoto state, is currently in EFCC custody over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling ₦189 billion.
According to sources within the anti-graft agency, the withdrawals allegedly breached the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.
A source within the anti-graft agency, who did not want to mention his name, disclosed that the senator was being questioned over the suspicious transactions during his tenure as governor of Sokoto. He said it was in connection with an unauthorised withdrawal of public funds.
“Arrest driven by politics, not justice” – Atiku
Reacting to the development via his official X, Atiku claimed the EFCC’s move was not about fighting corruption but rather part of a calculated effort to weaken the opposition.
“The only reason the EFCC has detained the former Governor of Sokoto State is because he is a member of the opposition coalition,” he said.
He added:
“It is a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to harass, intimidate, and decimate the opposition.”
Atiku slams Tinubu: Weaponising anti-corruption fight
The PDP chieftain expressed concern that anti-corruption institutions were being repurposed as political weapons.
“It is as though today, anyone who associates with the opposition is a target for phantom corruption allegations. Once coerced into joining the ruling party, their ‘sins’ are forgiven,” Atiku stated.
He added:
“This is not how to build institutions or fight corruption. Such tendencies only fuel the problem they claim to be combating.”

Atiku further alleged a pattern of using the EFCC to pressure opposition governors into defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Our assurance to Nigerians is that we will never succumb to these anti-democratic machinations designed to railroad the country into a one-party dictatorship,” he declared.
He called on civil society groups and the international community to condemn the alleged political misuse of anti-graft agencies.
GEJ allegedly holding talks with Atiku-led ADC
Previously, Legit.ng reported that a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said the party had been holding discreet talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan over a possible presidential run in the 2027 election.
A principal member of the ADC disclosed that the party had been holding talks with Jonathan to join its platform.
Legit.ng reports that in July, the opposition coalition formally adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election as well as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
