When Sunday-Francis Adedokun, a driver on the Bolt platform in Abuja, found the sum of 4,050 dollars (N2.876 million) in the backseat of his car, a couple of thoughts ran through his head, but they led him to return the money to the rider who had misplaced it. Sunday embodies the immaculate attitude Bolt encourages its drivers to emulate. In line with Bolt’s commitment to encouraging drivers to maintain customer service excellence and professionalism with riders, the platform rewarded Sunday with cash rewards and other gifts.

In this chat with the Sunday, he shares details of the experience and how that single act of kindness has proved worthwhile for him.

Please tell us about yourself

My name is Sunday Francis Adedokun. I am an Abuja-based driver on the Bolt platform. I am married with three children aged five, three and one. My wife is an auxiliary nurse and runs a small pharmacy. We also run a local fish and poultry farm.

Why did you choose to drive on the Bolt platform?

Before joining the Bolt platform as a driver, I was an Admin Officer in a company as a driver. A church member who is also a driver on the Bolt platform introduced me to Bolt and explained how he had been able to increase his income.

I have always wanted to be my own boss and be financially free, so I was immediately interested. What I earned from my former occupation was not sustainable to take care of my family. I also wanted the flexibility enjoyed while driving on the Bolt platform. As an Admin Officer, I couldn’t give enough attention to my farm. However, since I started driving on Bolt, I have been able to run the businesses efficiently. So I joined the Bolt platform in February 2022 and saw a good turnaround in just six months.

Share with us the experience that led you to discover the $4,050 in your car.

I was driving home around 7 pm after a day’s work when I witnessed an accident involving a couple. I stopped my car to provide some help and later drove the wife, Mrs Toyin-Oke, to their residence. On getting home around 9 pm, I found her money in my car as I was cleaning my vehicle in preparation for the next day. The entire sum was $4,050. So I drove back that night to Mrs Toyin-Oke's residence to return the money.

The fact that I returned the money impressed the couple, so they collected my contact. They kept in contact with me and patronized my fish farming business. In June, the couple invited me to their book launch and celebrated with me.

Were you conflicted about returning the money when you found it?

No, I was not. This would not be the first time riders have forgotten their items in my car. I usually go out of my way to return the lost items, from as little as bread to premium smartphones. I don't feel at peace when I have an item that does not belong to me. It is the way I was brought up.

Individuals and Bolt have celebrated your kind and honest gesture. How does this make you feel?

I want to say a big thank you to Bolt, who recognised me as a model driver on the platform. A bolt called me to appreciate my gesture and offered to take care of some of my financial responsibilities. At the time, my house rent had expired, my children's school fees were due, and I had some other financial commitments to meet. But Bolt has helped me, and I have also received some rewards from kind Nigerians, clearing up most of my debts. I also was gifted a plot of land worth about N 4.5 million. So that one act of kindness has opened doors for me. What I have gained since I returned the money is beautiful and limitless.

What advice do you have for other drivers and individuals that want to increase their income by driving on Bolt?

A person's heart is where acts of kindness come from. I received nearly N5 million for the $4,050 I returned to the owner. Kindness has lasting effects that take time to manifest but is beautiful in its reward. I cannot prescribe how everyone should act, but I recommend that kindness is more rewarding.

Also, joining Bolt was the best thing I did this year. It is an excellent choice if one is looking to supplement their income. Being a Bolt driver pays me more per day than I got in a month while working in an office job from 9 to 5.
