A single rhinestone-encrusted sock, once worn by the late pop icon Michael Jackson, has sold for €7,688 (over US$8,000 or £6,600) at an auction in Nîmes, France, on July 30.
The sock, which the acclaimed King of Pop wore during a 1997 performance on his HIStory World Tour, was discovered by a technician backstage after the show.

Preserved in a frame for 28 years, the piece of memorabilia was initially expected to fetch between €3,000 and €4,000.
The auctioned item, now off-white with aged rhinestones, was likely worn during Jackson’s famous performance of Billie Jean, a song closely associated with his iconic moonwalk.
According to a post from Nexta on X, the sock was sold alongside a backstage pass, which had been kept by the technician who found it while dismantling equipment after the show.
See below:
At the auction, the sock was sold along with a backstage pass from a crew member who, while dismantling equipment after the concert in Nice, discovered the item and kept it until now.
Auctioneer Aurore Illy described the sock as a “cult object” for Michael Jackson fans, highlighting its rarity and direct link to a historic moment in pop music history. Despite visible signs of age and staining, its cultural value made it a prized item for collectors.
Other memorabilia of Michael Jackson
Jackson's memorabilia has continued to fetch high prices since he died in 2009.
A glittery glove he wore during his first moonwalk in 1983 was purchased for US$350,000 by a gaming resort in Macau.
In 2023, a hat worn just before that historic performance sold in Paris for over US$80,000, while a black and white leather jacket from a 1980s Pepsi advert fetched £250,000.
