The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has reacted to growing complaints about the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality show.

Legit.ng recalled that season 10 of the show premiered on a double-day launch.

The commission stated it was concerned about the “brazen” contravention of Nigeria’s broadcast laws by the show.

This was in response to a petition from activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam calling for a ban or restriction of the show in public spaces.

In a statement signed by Pauline Ehusani, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, NBC confirmed that it had received the petition.

The commission said its management is already working on the matter and will take “vital decisions” to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

The statement read:

“Please be informed that the Commission is equally concerned with the brazen contravention of the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code (6th Edition) which clearly prohibit the airing of obscene content"

The regulator stressed that the NBC Act, updated as the National Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, empowers it to act against any broadcaster that violates these rules.

It encouraged viewers to flag any offensive BBNaija content they come across on social media, noting that repeated flagging could lead to the permanent removal of such material.

It added:

“In the same vein, the Commission is tasking you and other well-meaning Nigerians to immediately flag such content as soon as it appears on social media; if flagged enough, such content could be taken down permanently."

BBNaija has lost its values - Lawyer

In his petition, Idam believed the show had lost its entertainment value and now feeds viewers a steady diet of “real-time p*rn*graphy,” with little regard for public decency.

According to the lawyer, the current season—now in its second week—has already featured “brazen obscene displays” that would make even previously banned music videos look tame.

Idam argued that if NBC could ban music videos like Don’t Stop by Olamide and Tesojue by Reminisce for indecency, then it’s confusing why BBNaija is still being given a free pass.

He issued a 30-day ultimatum to NBC to take meaningful action by either banning the show or placing it on highly restricted platforms—away from children and uninterested viewers.

BBNaija season premiered on July 27 and constitutes a big trend in Nigeria.
