Asian markets tumbled Tuesday following a sharp sell-off on Wall Street fuelled by fears about the US economy as Donald Trump presses ahead with his global trade war and federal jobs cuts. Fears about the future battered Wall Street, where the Nasdaq tanked four percent owing to another plunge in high-flying tech titans including Apple, Amazon and Tesla.

Insurance market Lloyd's of London on Monday said it had taken a financial hit totalling about $2.3 billion from the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year. Lloyd's of London published financial results on Monday showing pre-tax profits of $11.4 billion for 2024, slightly less than the previous year.

A French court fined Swiss bank UBS 75,000 euros on Monday for the psychological harassment of two whistleblowers who had denounced a system that helped moneyed French clients dodge taxes. The bank and its French subsidiary were also definitively convicted of having set up a system of massive tax evasion between 2004 and 2012.

A major rescue operation was under way after a collision between an oil tanker and a cargo ship in the North Sea Monday which sparked a huge blaze and left 32 people injured. In October 2023, two cargo ships, the Verity and the Polesie, collided near Germany's Heligoland islands in the North Sea.
