NUPENG Slams Okonjo-Iweala Over Comment

Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, yesterday, dismissed report credited to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonji-Iweala, describing NUPENG as anti-Nigerians.

In a statement by its acting General Secretary, Mr. Aberare, the union, said she should hide her head in shame and resign as the economy is still in the doldrums, since her World Bank policies are to further pauperise the downtrodden.

It will be recalled that Okonji-Iweala, in the wake of NUPENG’s threat to embark on nationwide strike over non-payment of subsidy claims to verified oil marketers, which NUPENG said made members not to be paid in the past five months, allegedly labeled NUPENG as anti-Nigerians.

NUPENG however commended the maturity displaced by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, “who painstakingly looked at the issues involved and proffered solutions and an amicable settlement which led to the suspension of the strike and agreed that our members owed five months salary should be paid.”
