This photo shows residents of the Yarmouk Palestine refugee camp in Syria, as they await a UN food distribution.

Desperately needed, UN humanitarian distributions came to a standstill for over two weeks. Negotiations finally restored access on 24 February, bringing some relief.

This photo was released on Wednesday by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

It shows the scene when thousands of desperate Palestinians trapped inside the camp on the edge of the Syrian capital, Damascus, wait for food parcels to be distributed by the aid worker.

At the moment, more than 18,000 refugees live in the camp.

Much of Yarmouk has been ruined by shelling, and attempts to deliver aid to the inhabitants were hampered by continued fighting in Syria's three-year-old civil war.

The camp has been cut off since last July. By now, many residents are weak and severely malnourished, while the the risk of disease increases.

The three-year civil war in Syria has killed about 140,000 people and displaced millions more.
