Femi Falana Urges The Senate Not To Screen Nominees For Sanusi's Replacement

Femi Falana, Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, SAN, on Thursday called on the Senate not to screen any nominations submitted by President Goodluck Jonathan for replacing the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi.

Mr. Sanusi is the still the substantive CBN Governor, Mr. Falana alleged, and therefore, there is no basis for the appointment of a new governor yet.

He recommended to "suspend the process for the replacement of the CBN governor by withdrawing the new nomination forwarded to the Senate," as Nigeria cannot have both a suspended governor and a substantive one.

The Senate, in its turn, "should put off any debate on the fresh nomination pending the end of the tenure of the suspended governor."

However, Mr. Sanusi's allegations of missing oil fund in the Federation Account must also not be ignored, and he himself must be investigated for the allegations levelled against him by the Presidency, the lawmaker said.

Mr. Sanusi has been suspended from the office by President Goodluck Jonathan with effect since February, 20. He was at an ECOWAS meeting in Niger but returned to Nigeria upon learning of the situation. Security agents relieved him of his passport immediately upon his arrival.

Mr. Sanusi's suspension is based on "various acts of financial recklessness and misconduct inconsistent with the administration's vision of a Central Bank," according to the official letter from the Presidency.
