Breaking: Judge Withdraws From Al-Mustapha’s Case Citing "Personal Reasons"

Justice Ibrahim Saulawa of the Court of Appeal, Lagos, today withdrew from the three-man panel of judges charged with listening to the appeal of Major Mustapha requesting to annul the death sentence on him for the murder of Abiola.

Mr. Saulawa cited to past encounter to a similar case as reason of his withdrawal.

Mr. Al-Mustapha was judged in Lagos to be involved in the killing of Mrs Abiola life partner of the popular politician and winner of the 1993 national elections Mr Moshood Abiola and was therefore sentenced to death as payment for his crime.

Mr. Al-Mustapha, was during Abacha's reign chief security officer.

He is hoping to annul the death sentence in the appeal court.
