Niger State Governor Breaches CBN Naira Law, Risks Six Months Jail Term

The governor of Niger State, Sanni Bello risk six months imprisonment after a video of him breaching the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) law surfaced online.

Bello and some persons were seen in the video dancing at a party, as he was being sprayed naira by guests - the governor and others were stepping on the note while dancing.

The constitution frowns against persons abusing the country's legal tender, naira, by spraying, dancing or matching on the naira issued by the apex bank during social occasions.

Section 21 of the CBN Act 2007 rules that such action as aforementioned is an abuse of the currency. Other actions considered as a deliberate act to diminish the naira includes mutilating, tearing, squeezing, stumping, stapling, engraving, writing on the country's currency.

The governor is the latest public figure to be caught defacing the naira. Chief of Staff to Abia State Governor, Anthony Agbazuere, and clergyman, Chukwuemeka Odumeje, had also been taped in the same situation five months ago, but the CBN didn't take any action against them.

Last month, the CBN’s Currency Operations Department head, Dorothy Onyene, had stated during a CBN fair that the financial regulator is committed to ensuring perpetrators are charged to face the law.

The punishment for committing such offence is a six months jail term or N50,000 fine, or in some cases, both punishment will be issued.
