The 58-year-old was hired to replace fellow countryman Paulo Fonseca who led Roma to the Europa League semi-final this season.

However, the Italian side were crushed by Man United, who subsequently eliminated them from the competition.

Metro UK reports Mourinho is now due to inherit a squad that failed to compete favourably in the domestic league as they sealed a seventh-place finish, a distant 16 points behind fourth-placed Juventus.

It is for this reason the Special One is considering rebuilding his own team and has now set his sights on Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder has grown to become an unpopular figure across his five-year spell at the Emirates especially among supporters.

Despite his flaws, he has somehow managed to be a mainstay in the team under three successive managers who have tutored him at the north London club.

Mikel Arteta has often spoken highly of the 28-year-old, but with Arsenal needing to undergo an overhaul, Sky Italy claims they are prepared to let him go.

The Gunners value the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach at around €25m but Roma are hoping to renegotiate that down to around €20m.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Real Madrid flop, Eden Hazard, has reportedly emerged as a top transfer target for new Roma boss Jose Mourinho this summer.

The 30-year-old joined Los Blancos in a deal valued at around €115 million in 2019 but has failed to live up to the huge prize since then - with a series of injuries hampering his performances for them.

He has made just 45 appearances scoring five times and assisting eight other goals after two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, Mourinho is now hoping to reunite with the Belgian forward having already worked together during the Portuguese's second stint at Chelsea.
