His words:
“Excellent news: Germany will support launch of a new German-West African Center for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention.
“It will be located in Ghana and be part of 8 new centers worldwide to fight global challenges.”
In another tweet, the diplomat hinted that the centre and the feasibility study on vaccine production will both be up and running as soon as possible.
Some Nigerians on social media have been complaining that the choice is a reflection of the bad state of the country's economy.
Others, however, noted that Nigeria cannot benefit from all Foreign Direct Investments in Africa.
Joel Ayodele wrote on Twitter:
“Must everything come to Nigeria? So companies and institutions don't have the right to choose any place except Nigeria? I hope we stop this kind of conversation before it is too late.”
Oladipo Shakir wrote:
“Maybe because Nigeria is having so many other international hospitals.”
Olusegun Saint wrote:
“Twitter picked Ghana over Nigeria for a base. Now Germany picks Ghana over Nigeria for the West African centre of global health. Can't we see what these portend? Can't we see we are losing ground in the global community? Giant of Africa my foot!”
John Doe asked a rhetorical question:
“Who is going to choose a country where the government cannot guarantee your safety?”
Jumoke Briggs wrote:
“Nigeria will continue to be sidelined às we battle against insurgency, power and other problems.”
Emedem Onyeka Anthony wrote:
“Not surprised really. Time we ask ourselves some honest questions.”
The news comes days after Twitter, the American micro-blogging and social networking service, selected Ghana as the headquarters for its operations in Africa.
This was announced by the company's CEO Jack Dorsey in a tweet on Monday, April 12.
Reacting to the decision of Twitter, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated that Nigeria lost the grand opportunity due to misrule by the President Buhari-led administration.
The party further stated that the numerous attempts to the Nigerian government to suppress free speech and inconsistent economic policies are factors that were considered by Twitter.
