Former Nigerian international Daniel Amokachi has thrown his weight of support for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) saying Nigeria would have won AFCON 2000 if the technology was in place at that time.

Recall that controversy ensued during the penalty shootout of the final match at the national stadium in Surulere, Lagos Nigeria after Victor Ikpeba’s penalty was ruled out.

Replays from several angles showed that the ball which bounced-off the cross bar had cross the line, but centre referee Morad Daami failed to award the goal as Cameroon won the tournament 4-3 via spot kicks after the match ended 2-2.

During a chat with Brila FM and cited in Complete Sports, Amokachi stated that he would have welcomed VAR during his playing days.

“I would have welcomed VAR during my playing days because with VAR we would have won the AFCON 2000.”

Asked who he thinks should lead the Super Eagles attack during the next round of AFCON qualifiers, the 1994 AFCON and 1996 Olympic gold medal winner said:

”Paul Onuachu has more better chance to spearhead the attack for Nigeria. He’s the only one and that’s if the coaching crew know how to use him.
“What Onuachu is experiencing in the Super Eagles was what Victor Agali faced during his time in the team, we didn’t use him well. He was scoring goals when he was in Germany but the pattern of play in the Eagles did not suit him.”

Ex-Juventus president tells club to make huge decision about Ronaldo, claims his signature is a mistake

In the history of the competition which is being organized every four years, no African nation has ever won the championship despite their efforts.

Nigeria has never reached the quarterfinal stages in all their World Cup campaign even though they almost did at the 2018 edition in Russia.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen caught up with five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo after Napoli defeated Juventus in the Serie A on Saturday, February 13.

The Nigerian forward was in action until the 75th minute of the encounter before he was replaced by Andrea Pategna at the Diego Maradona stadium.

Ronaldo played full 90 minutes in the encounter but failed to save his side after Lorenzo Insigne had scored for the hosts from the penalty spot in the first half.
