Many feared killed in Maiduguri explosion, gun battle between terrorists, troops

- There was confusion in from of the University of Maiduguri on Tuesday, February 23

- Some Boko Haram insurgents who attempted to launch an attack on the school were stopped by gallant Nigerian soldiers

Emerging reports indicate that an explosion in the midst of a gun battle between Boko Haram terrorists and troops of the Nigerian Army in Borno may have claimed the lives of many on Tuesday, February 23.

The Nation reports that the mayhem started when soldiers tried to stop insurgents from launching an attack on the University of Maiduguri from a spot close to a military trench.

Residents in nearby areas like Mairi, Kaleri, and Constein claimed that detonation caused fear and pandemonium but cannot assert if there was any casualty.

One of the residents who spoke with newsmen said:

“People are just running in no direction. The explosions were coming from our area. What I cannot say is if people have died."

Meanwhile, Nigerian troops had successfully recovered Marte town from the Boko Haram terrorists.

A military officer quoted in the report stated that the troops successfully and safely detonated series of IEDs laced along the routes and finally dominated the general area.

He said:

“New Marte effectively in our hands since 3 pm. Our will and determination are unshaken. We are ever determined not to let our service chiefs and the nation down.”

Part of a Nigerian Army statement confirming the development stated:

“The troops backed by air cover from the Nigerian Air Force, successfully charged through Marte town, destroying several Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) and landmines laced across their routes and killing scores of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists and successfully recovered the town.
