Buhari pledges to recruit 30,960 community security officers in 774 LGAs

- According to the minister of special duties and inter-government affairs, George Akume, 40 officers would be recruited in each local government of the country

The federal government has said that it would recruit 30,960 graduates as community security officers to implement the policy of the Community Safety and Human Security Programme (CSHSP) in Nigeria.

Daily Trust reports that each of the 774 local governments in the country would have 40 officers.

Legit.ng gathered that while inaugurating a 17-man committee on CSHSP in Abuja on Monday, February 15, the minister of special duties and inter-government affairs, George Akume, said this was to strategise on ways to reduce crimes and violence in the country.

He said:

“This is to expand the narratives and intelligence towards community safety, first at the local level which in most instances act as a springboard for all major violence and conflicts that escalate to national acrimony.”

Akume, who chairs the committee, said the programme was also designed to generate over 30,000 jobs for the youths and create skilled manpower for over 50,000 women across Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the government of Benue raised the alarm over the influx of armed herders and an increase in deadly attacks in the state.

It was reported that the government lamented that the police are overstretched in tackling the insecurity in the state.

The state deputy governor, Benson Abounu, in an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, said some local governments in the state have as low as five police officers.

Abounu said an investigation into the herdsmen’s activities was prompted by an alarm raised by Nasarawa state governor, Abdullahi Sule, who briefed President Muhammadu Buhari about the activities of Boko Haram insurgents along his state’s borders with Benue.
