Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has linked up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backroom team.

Fletcher spent an illustrious 20 years with the Red Devils after growing through the ranks from United's academy.

The former Scotland captain left his boyhood club in 2015, but made a return to coach the under-16 years after his retirement from active football.

Despite being previously linked with a role in United's board, the Manchester club has resolved to instead offer him a coaching role with the first team.

Speaking on the development, Solskjaer hailed Fletcher's experience in football, asserting it will come in handy in his new position. Solskjaer said, as cited in Metro:

"Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player.
"He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff," he added.

The retired midfielder will now join the likes of Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick - who are also ex-United players in forming part of Ole's technical bench.

His arrival comes at a time the Old Trafford dwellers are enjoying an impressive run of results in the league as they are currently joint-top with leaders Liverpool.
