A wonderful goal from Danny Ings against his former club was all Sounthampton needed to defeat hard-fighting reigning Premier League champions Liverpool 1-0.

The goal came as early as the 2nd minute after Ward-Prowse caught the Reds out via a free-kick and with a superb lofted finish from Ings to put Southampton in the ascendancy.

Jurgen Klopp's men came close to restoring the parity in the 12th minute as Jordan Henderson fired over, with both teams under a considerable amount of pressure.

Six minutes later, a beautiful flick from Sadio Mane found Mohamed Salah but Forster rushed off his line to win the ball to deny the visitors.

Moments before half-time, a good chance for Liverpool came again as Mane crossed for Salah, but the Egypt international was unable to direct his header on target.

Southampton performed very well in the opening period a they were well organised and provided a threat going forward as both teams headed into the break, with advantage to Southampton.

Desperate Liverpool came firing from all cylinders in the second stanza as Southampton sat deep with Klopp's side continuing to put them under pressure.

In the 69th minute, Roberto Firmino sent a header wide as the Reds continued to pile all the pressure against the Saints.

Liverpool however failed in their quest to at least take a point off their opponents as there were no further goals. It ended; Southampton 1-0 Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Manchester United summer signing, Amad Diallo, who is expected to complete his switch to the Premier League club has hinted he is already heading to the Old Trafford.
