Osun, Zamfara and 5 other Nigerian states not testing enough for COVID-19

Following the spike in the number of coronavirus cases across the country, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has expressed worry that states are not conducting enough tests for the deadly virus.

According to Chikwe Ihekweazu, the NCDC director-general, since the pandemic broke out in February, a million people are yet to be tested in Nigeria.

After months of recording low figures, the federal health agency via its official Twitter account on Thursday, December 10, announced 675 new infections. This is the highest number of cases recorded so far in about five months.

While the country has recorded over 71,000 confirmed cases of infections, 1,190 have died while 65,474 recovered.

Legit.ng in this piece lists seven states that are not conducting enough tests, according to Premium Times, quoting Ihekweazu speaking during the COVID-19 briefing by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Thursday, December 10.

3. Kogi

4. Osun

5. Ebonyi

6. Adamawa

7. Zamfara

Fears of a second wave of COVID-19

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the federal government had raised fears that Nigeria could be entering a second wave in the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, said he had directed isolation and treatment centres in the country to prepare for reopening over the new development.

The minister speaking at a COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, December 10, disclosed that Nigeria may be on the verge of a second wave judging by the increase in the number of confirmed cases in the last few days.

In a related development, Nasir El-Rufai has raised the possibility of imposing another lockdown if the COVID-19 surge in the state continues.

El-Rufai made the statement on Wednesday, December 9, when he raised concerns over the increasing number of cases in Kaduna.

The governor said measures need to be taken to contain the spread of the virus in order to prevent the state’s health system from being overwhelmed by the disease.
