Newspapers review for Dec 1: Governor Zulum urges FG to battle Boko Haram with mercenaries
The newspapers review for Tuesday, December 1, focuses on the security situation in Borno state which came to the fore after the killings of some farmers in Zabarmari community in Jere local government area of the state.

Leading the review is a report from The Nation which stated that Governor Babagana Zulum has made some recommendations to the federal government that could help in the defeat of the Boko Haram insurgents.

The Borno state governor made the recommendations when he received a delegation of the federal government which came to the state on a condolence visit.
He advised the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to recruit foreign mercenaries to help in ending the Boko Haram insurgency, instead of relying solely on the Nigerian security forces.
The governor also called for the recruitment of the youths into the military to complement the efforts of the Nigerian forces.
Meanwhile, the military has said that operations in the northeast are being sabotaged by civilian informants.
According to The Sun, Major-General John Enenche, coordinator defence media operations, made the disclosure on Monday, November 30.

Enenche expressed worry about the recent trend of residents in the northeast declining to provide useful information to security agencies.
The military spokesman added that this reduces the military’s effectiveness to combat the insecurity scourge in the region.
In a related report, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised a presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, for saying the farmers were killed in Borno because they failed to get clearance before going to their farms.
The Guardian reported that the party in a statement through its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, accused the presidency of displaying a lack of empathy.

He said the statement was an admission that the government had been overwhelmed by terrorists and could no longer guarantee the safety of lives.
However, Garba Shehu said his statement should not be misconstrued as displaying a lack of empathy for the victims of the killings.
According to The Punch, the presidential aide said he was only explaining the military procedures on safe movement.
