Nigeria's Akinwumi Adesina has been re-elected for a second term as the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The development excited Nigerian leaders such as President Muhammadu Buhari, his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, president of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and others, according to a This Day report.
In his reaction, President Buhari said he received the news of Adesina’s victory while presiding over a virtual Council of State meeting on Thursday, August 27, in the State House, Abuja “with a round of applause.”
A statement by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina, said: “As Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, announced the good news, President Buhari led a round of applause, and declared: ‘He deserves it.'”
Former president Jonathan in his own reaction said the AfDB boss recorded significant achievements in his first tenure and urged him to do more.
Also, Lawan hailed the re-election of Adesina, saying his victory affirmed the confidence and trust of the shareholders in his leadership of the institution.
Also reacting, Gbajabiamila described Adesina’s re-election as a triumph of integrity and dedication to duty.
Nigeria's minister of finance, Zainab Ahmed, has also reacted to the re-election.
Recall that Adesina was the sole candidate for the multilateral lender. He was re-elected by the bank's Board of Governors at the AfDB virtual 55th annual meeting.
Adesina who was first elected as the 8th AfDB president back in 2015, is the first Nigerian to serve as head of the bank group.
Meanwhile, Adesina has also reacted to President Buhari's and Jonathan's congratulatory messages.
"Thank you very much Your Excellency Mr President @MBuhari for your exceptional support for me and strong confidence.
"You stood behind me. You believed in me. Nigeria and all Nigerians stood with me. I will make Nigeria and Africa proud at all times by God’s grace," Adesina tweeted.
"Thank you very much President @GEJonathan for your excellent support and confidence in me —at all times. I am humbled. I will serve Africa to the very best of my God-given abilities. So help me God!" the AfDB president replied ex-President Jonathan.
