HND graduates to embark on industrial action over discrimination

Following the reported discrimination over their degree certificates in the workplace, a coalition of holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) is threatening to embark on an industrial action if the issue is not addressed by the government.
The group has asked the government to implement a white paper detailing the removal of dichotomy on their career progression in public service in four weeks or face a strike.

Chris Isiquzo Ikechukwu, president of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) told a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, that the coalition has decided not to remain silent about the issue anymore, Daily Trust reported.
He said the group will occupy the office of the head of service of the federation if its demands are not met.
“We are going to occupy that office until they do the needful because we will not continue to keep quiet and things will continue to go wrong,” Ikechukwu stated.
In his own contribution, Sabastine Onyemaobi, the president of Higher National Diploma Holders Association of Nigeria (HNDHAN) pointed out that HND graduates have continued to face discrimination, stigmatisation and undue stagnation when compared to their university graduates.
He disclosed that HND holders do not progress above level 14 and that they are faced with demotion in cases where they try to rise above that, after acquiring Postgraduate diploma (PGD) and masters as required by the law.
In another report, a recent poll by Legit.ng has shown that the majority of Nigerian undergraduates feel safe going back to school when universities will be allowed to reopen by the federal government.
The federal government has been strengthening measures to contain the disease as Nigeria records hundreds of coronavirus cases daily.
In spite of this Nigerian students have been mounting pressure on the government to reopen the citadels of learning, adding that they want to resume.
Meanwhile, it was another remarkable feat for the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu-led administration as the Lagos governor inaugurated new governing councils for the state-owned institutions on Wednesday, August 26.
Speaking after the event through a statement on his Twitter page, Governor Sanwo-Olu said it is a dream and priority of his government to bring reform agenda aimed at transforming tertiary institutions in Lagos state into innovation centres.
Legit.ng gathered that the schools with the newly sworn-in councils are Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State Polytechnic (LSPOTECH).
