Reps endorse Iweala’s candidacy for WTO job

One of Nigeria's former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, has gotten a major boost in her bid to emerge as the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Among many prominent Nigerians, the minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu, lent his support for Iweala's candidacy during a plenary of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, July 14.

In his submission, Elumele, stated that the former minister is very qualified for the much-envied position, Channels TV reports.

Added to this, lawmakers in the lower chamber who are in support of Iweala called on President Muhammadu Buhari to get other African leaders to throw their weight behind her candidacy.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported the African Union's legal counsel has said the nomination of Okonjo-Iweala, for the position of director-general of the WTO was not in line with the present rules.

This was disclosed in a letter dated Monday, June 15, from the AU's legal office addressed to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Nigeria to the African Union.

The legal counsel in the letter referred to a note dated June 9 where it asked for the review of the office and argued against the nomination of Nigeria's former finance minister.

It was added that Okonjo-Iweala's nomination for the top position is against the existing rules of the organization.

This development came less than two weeks after President Buhari's nomination of Okonjo-Iweala as a candidate for the position was accepted by WTO.

The Nigerian leader had withdrawn the candidacy of Yonov Frederick Agah, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO and approved the nomination of former finance minister on Thursday, June 4.
