Forty members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving at the Kano/Jigawa area command of the Nigeria Customs Service have paid the WAEC fees of no fewer than 50 indigent students in Kano.

According to the Corps Liaison Officer (CLO), Comrade Akin-Ola Emmanuel, the gesture was aimed at assisting Kano indigent students.

The receipt of payment to the tune of N697,500 was handed to the Kano state commissioner for education, Malam Muhammad Sanusi Sa’id Kiru, at a ceremony held on Monday, March 3, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the commissioner, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Lauratu Ado Diso, called on beneficiaries to come out in flying colours to appreciate the corps members' kind gesture.

The commissioner also commended the corps members for the sacrifice they have made and urged others to emulate them.

Nafisa Isah Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, commended the corps members for sponsoring them to write the forthcoming examination.

In other news, NYSC has debunked a fake press release purported to have been issued by the scheme's director-general Shuaibu Ibrahim which claimed the February allowances of the corps members would be channelled towards curbing coronavirus.

NYSC dusted the misleading insinuation while clearing the air in a statement by the scheme's hierarchy on Monday, March 2.

The scheme said the rumour is a 'false representation' of its image by 'fabricators' who are bent on bringing the image of the institution into disrepute, adding that such statement cannot be issued by its director.

"To all intents and purposes, the false representation by the fabricators of that mischievous post smacks of insensitivity.

"A global issue such as the Coronavirus which represents a threat to humanity should not be reduced to an object of joke," NYSC said.

The scheme urged all corps members to disregard the false information while also promising to accord top priority to their welfare.

"The management of the National Youth Service Corps and indeed the federal government shall continue to accord top priority to the welfare of corps member," NYSC added.
