Operation Amotekun: Ogun House of Assembly passes bill to establish new security outfit

- Ogun state House of Assembly has passed Operation Amotekun bill into law

- The bill would give legal backing to the establishment of Ogun state security network agency and Amotekun corps

- Yusuf Sherif, the majority leader of the House, said the committee recommended that the bill be passed as approved by the conference of speakers of the southwest legislature

Following the passage of a bill to legalise the Operation Amotekun by the Ekiti state House of Assembly, the Ogun state House of Assembly on Tuesday, March 3, also passed its bill on the new security outfit.

The Nation reports that the majority leader of the House, Yusuf Sherif, had presented the report of the committee on security and strategy during plenary in Abeokuta.

Legit.ng gathered that the majority leader stated that the committee recommended that the bill be passed as approved by the conference of speakers of the southwest legislature.

The majority leader moved the motion for the adoption of the report and it was seconded by Musefiu Lamidi, who is a member of the House.

The motion was also supported by the whole House.

Sherif, thereafter, moved the motion for the third reading of the bill and this was seconded by Sola Adams.

The clerk of the House, Deji Adeyemo, read the bill for the third time while the speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, ordered that a clean copy of the bill be forwarded to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmakers had during the second reading of the bill on February 20, stated that the bill was to assist in maintaining law and order in the state.

They posited that the Amotekun corps would be a community policing body that would complement the work of other security agencies in the state.

The lawmaker stated that Amotekun would curb criminal activities such as kidnapping, robbery, cultism, and terrorism.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the southwest Houses of Assembly turned down the demand by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to participate in operation of Amotekun, a new security outfit in the region.

It was reported that the Houses of Assembly of the states had concluded work on the bill after the public hearings without making any input to give MACBAN a place.

Also, the process of amending the 2019 law that brought about the creation of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) commenced by the state's House of Assembly so as to accommodate Operation Amotekun.

In order to beef-up security in the state, operatives of the outfit are allowed to work with other related agencies.
