Trump's legal team blasts House, says impeachment charges unlawful

- The legal team representing American President Donald Trump has picked holes in the House impeachment proceedings against him

- According to his lawyers, the proceedings are an attempt to interfere with 2020 presidential elections and a slap on Americans

- The team also said that the impeachment proceeding a dangerous attack on democracy and a move to disrupt 2016 election result

The legal team of the US president, Donald Trump, has released its first formal response to the impeachment charges levelled against their client, calling it a “dangerous attack” on democracy.

In a document released by the legal team, it said that the impeachment articles do not apportion any crime and are just an attempt to interfere with the 2020 presidential elections, BBC reports.

The team which was led by White House counsel, Pat Cipollone and Trump’s personal lawyers, Jay Sekulow, said they are challenging the ground on which the president was impeached by the House.

In describing the impeachment proceedings, the lawyers said that it is not only a brazen attempt but very unlawful, adding that the charges were "the result of a lawless process that violated basic due process and fundamental fairness".

"This is a brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election, now just months away," they said

The legal team also said that the proceedings are an affront to the American people who chose the president.

It should be noted that the response by the lawyers came on Saturday, January 18, a day after Trump added special prosecutors from former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment.
