Edo state government says it could not confirm if Osaze Osemwingie-Ero was arrested by operatives of INTERPOL in France

Ero, the commissioner for arts, culture and tourism of the state, was reportedly arrested for alleged money laundering.

He was reportedly arrested in France since last month for having $2 million.

The Nation, quoting a top government official, said the state government was aware of Osemwingie-Ero’s questioning by INTERPOL for an offence allegedly committed before his appointment.

The government said Osemwingie-Ero’s arrest had nothing to do with Governor Obaseki.

“We learnt about the alleged arrest of the Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Commissioner, Hon. Osaze Osemwingie-Ero from unreliable sources on social media and we are unable to confirm either the alleged arrest or what might have led to it.

“But we can confirm without equivocation that whatever the issues might be, they are personal and have nothing whatsoever to do with the Edo state government or Governor Godwin Obaseki,” special adviser to the Edo state governor on media and communication strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said.

Meanwhile, had reported that Governor Obaseki claimed that the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, laid traps for him but he overcame them.

Obaseki made the claim during a meeting with APC members from all the wards and local government areas in Edo North at Jattu-Uzaire.

According to Obaseki, Oshiomhole tried to entrap him by picking Philip Shaibu as his deputy and Osarodion Ogie as Secretary to the State Government, thinking the trio would quarrel and fall apart.

Obaseki said Oshiomhole would only be accepted back into the party when he is remorseful.

"Can you imagine a national chairman that is creating problems in his own house? Because of that, we had to suspend him and he remains suspended. We pray that God should have mercy on him because he has done something bad against God and the people of Edo State; he should find his way back into the party and apologize to all of us."
