Nigeria’s statistics agency, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has released a report showing the level of corruption in the country.

The report titled The 2019 Corruption in Nigeria: Pattern and Trends was published by the NBS in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and UK Aid (UNODC).

The first report of this nature was published in 2017.

“This second survey on bribery and other forms of corruption, which was conducted in May and June 2019, covered more than 33,000 households across the country, providing data for each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The survey's primary focus is to assess the actual experiences of Nigerians whenever they come into contact with up to 20 different types of public official,” said Dr Yemi Kale, the NBS statistician-general in the preface to the report.

ThisDay reports that the NBS boss presented highlights of the report on Friday, December 6, at the State House Conference Center in Abuja.

Kale said the 2019 report rated Imo state as the least corrupt state in Nigeria. The southeastern state was rated the least corrupt state in Nigeria with 17.6%, followed by Jigawa and Plateau states.

The report's state by state corruption index also shows Kogi state as the most corrupt state in the country.

“The report gave a state-by-state record of the corruption index in Nigeria, with Kogi state leading as the most corrupt state (48%), followed by Gombe at 43%.

“The report also suggested that there is a remarkable decrease in the prevalence of corruption in Imo state in the short time span.

“In the survey also, Nigerians identified unemployment, insecurity and corruption as the biggest problems of the country,” Kale was quoted to have said.

The report further states that bribery in Nigeria is slightly less prevalent than three years ago.

“Out of all Nigerian citizens who had at least one contact with a public official in the 12 months prior to the 2019 survey, 30.2 per cent paid a bribe to, or were asked to pay a bribe by, a public official. This means that, although still relatively high, the prevalence of bribery in Nigeria has undergone a moderate, yet statistically significant, decrease since 2016, when it stood at 32.3 per cent.

“Three out of the country's six zones (North-East, North-West and South-West) have recorded decreases in the prevalence of bribery since 2016, with the North-West experiencing a considerable (and statistically significant) decline in the prevalence of bribery, from 36 to 25 per cent, while the two other zones recorded smaller decreases.

“By contrast, the North-Central, South-East and South-South zones recorded further increases in the prevalence of bribery from 2016 to 2019,” the report added.
