Bayelsa election: INEC says scheduled poll will take place

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, November 14, disclosed that the Bayelsa state governorship election scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 16, will be held as planned despite a court order invalidated the candidacy of David Lyon, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming poll.
Premium times reports that Sarian Dangosu, the electoral commission’s publicity secretary in Bayelsa, said the Federal High Court ruling which invalidated the candidacy of the APC did not stop the election.
She said the court’s verdict only affected the APC while the other 43 candidates will go to contest in the coming poll.

The electoral commission also stated that it will comply with all legitimate court orders served on it in respect of the Bayelsa state governorship election.
The Nation reports that Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner and chairman of its information and voter education committee, stated that INEC would obey legitimate court orders as it has always done in the past.
Okoye also said the Bayelsa election will go on a planned. He said the ballot papers for the poll have been printed and the ballot papers are being deployed.
Meanwhile, following the judgement given on Thursday, November 14, by the Federal High Court sitting in Bayelsa state to disqualify the governorship candidate of APC in the state, David Lyon, to participate in the Saturday, November 16, the party has rejected the verdict and headed to appeal court.
The Nation reports that the APC said at a press briefing on Thursday, November 14, that it would appeal the judgement as its lawyers were already working on the processes to first secure a stay of execution.
Legit.ng gathered that the party accused the judge of the court, Justice Jane Inyang of escaping with the judgement she delivered which nullified the party’s primary election that produced Lyon as the candidate of the party for the election.
