In a sports largely dominated by men, Sandra Mensimah Owusu, a young Ghanaian fitness model and 2018 Olympian at Argentina, Buenos Aires, is challenging narratives about weightlifting and couching a niche in the sports arena.

While Sandra Mensimah Owusu had been engaged in weightlifting, she gained national prominence when she represented the country at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Prior to the 2018 games, Mensimah Owusu, 16, had her first shot at an international competition when she joined the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) athletes’ brigade which served as a qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games.

In spite of the challenges she encountered as a female in a male-dominated sport, a determined Mensimah Owusu joined an all-male team to participate in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, making her the only Ghanaian female to represent the country.

The Ghana National Weightlifting team member sat for an interview with and detailed her journey to becoming a national asset.

Mensimah Owusu disclosed that a man she hardly knew discovered her and introduced her to the sport.

Her first reaction was an outright rejection but the man insisted she was cut for weightlifting and despite the challenges, especially as a woman, she has made it to three international weightlifting games including the Youth Olympic Games, African Seniors Championship and the African Youth and Junior Championship.
