The federal government therefore asked the Nigerian branch of the organisation it can defend itself against claims that it does not promote tweets that could overthrow the country's constitution.

It tweeted:

Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that AI asked the federal government to immediately release Omoyele Sowore from DSS custody if the journalist is not being charged for any offence.

The non-governmental organisation focused on human rights made the statement on Saturday, August 3, in reaction to the arrest of the journalist.

The human rights body said it was concerned about the arrest of Sowore and urged the federal government to protect the rights of the journalist.

"Amnesty International is concerned about arrest of Omoyele Sowore @YeleSowore by DSS operatives. We urge the authorities to respect his rights and follow due process. If not charged for any offence, he should be released immediately,” AI said in a tweet.

It was also reported that the organisation condemned the federal government’s proscription of the Shiite movement in Nigeria.
